Firm originally started by William Clowes in 1803. Called William Clowes & Sons by 1843.
Printed periodicals, official reports, books, catalogues, music. Seam printing from 1820. By 1843 operated largest printing works in the world, with 24 presses, its own type and stereotype foundries, and 2500 tons of stereo plates and 80,000 woodcuts in store. Printed major works for Royal Academy of Arts, the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, the Great Exhibition and the British Museum. Developed type printed (as opposed to engraved-plate) music printing. |
