Took over Jacob Tonson's premises opposite Catherine st in the Strand. millar changed the name of the premises from 'Shakespeare's Head' to 'Buchanan's Head'. Married Jane, the daughter of London printer and printmaker Andrew Johnson in 1730. Published Dr. Samuel Johnson's 'Dictionary'. Distributor for 'The Society for the Encouragment of Learning (est. 1736). Principal Assistant: Robert Lawless (d. 1806). Master of Thomas Cadell 1758. Cadell became partner in in 1765 and succeeded to the business in 1768. |
